The top is a heavy board that is edge and finger joint glued together and finished in veneer. The legs are also fingerjointed boards. It generally looks nice, but the finish is quite sloppy. there are some rough spots where it was not thoroughly sanded too. I purchased this table because it was on sale. Pros: shorter but still substantial hutch, lower shelf, 2 drawers, over 40", nice color, nice looking design, assembly is logical and intuitive. I'd been looking for a desk with exactly this type and configuration of storage options forever. Cons: flimsy (my elbow weight bends the surface while typing on a laptop), drawers are too shallow (~2"), exposed screw/fastening holes, you have to drill/force the holes for assembly of lower shelf and for the hooks, odd surface/base alignment, edges are sharp and uncomfortable. Final verdict: It's junk and I'd return in a heartbeat, but as is the custom, returning requires repackaging in a barely there shipping box full of powdered styrofoam, then lugging the thing to the post office. I'm just one person in a 5th floor apartment w a small car. The effort required to return is further beyond my means than losing $300 - which is essentially a quarter of my monthly rent or two weeks of groceries - and that is wild. Unsurprising, but wild.
