It does take quite a bit of time to put together but I wouldn’t say it was hard. The directions had a lot of detail and were simple to follow. I put it together mostly alone over two days (desk one day, hutch the next). My only complaint is the picture on Wayfair is misleading in color. It is not a true grey as I had hoped. The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece.
