Mechanical clocks are something that hits home for me, in a very special way. They remind me of my long deceased maternal grandmother, who had around a dozen of them. The Abbot Clock by Hermle is especially beautiful in person. The attention to detail Hermle applies to their clocks is something of an art form. The variegated tone and texture of the wood used to make this clock’s case, contrast wonderfully with the bright, elegant polished nickel of the weights, pendulum, and ring around the face of the clock. While not a large clock, The Abbot Clock makes a large statement in the space it is placed in. For those concerned with how loud the movement is on this clock, it is muted, delicate, and easily tuned out if one is focused on something else. My only issue with the clock is that Hermle or Wayfair did a poor job on packing the clock, whichever was in charge of that task. The clock was shipped in two boxes, one for the clock and pendulum, and another for the two heavy weights. The box with the clock inside it was almost completely open when it was delivered, and the pendulum had almost fallen out of the box, fortunately it had not, and all in that box was undamaged. The weights, however, were not so lucky. That box was sealed tightly, but the styrofoam encasement used to hold the weights was not the correct size for them, and the weights had a good bit of room to just slide up and down in their respective slots. One weight was completely undamaged, but the other weight had the retaining nut fall off the bottom cap of the weight, and cause significant denting and scratching to the bottom of that weight. I plan to phone Wayfair Monday morning to see if they will be able to replace the one part, as I had already gone to all the effort of hanging the clock, and removing all the packing materials before I noticed the damage to the weight. Even with the damage to the one weight, it does not affect my love for this clock, or my happiness in ordering it. To anyone considering this clock, take the plunge, and order it, you won’t regret it!
Edit- I phoned customer service, regarding the damaged weight cap, mentioned in my review above. The agent I spoke with could not have been kinder, or more helpful. After getting all the relevant information, she placed me on a brief hold, while she phoned the warehouse. When she took me off hold, I was presented with two resolution options, 1) I could have the entire clock replaced, free of charge, or 2) I could have the damaged weight piece replaced. Being pleased with the other aspects of the clock, I chose option 2. The replacement weight piece arrived, via UPS, from Hermle, within 3 days of my conversation with customer service.
