The roebellini palm (Phoenix roebelenii) offers a miniature palm choice growing to a maximum of 12 feet. Preferring warmer climates in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 through 11, the robellini palm does require some care regarding its soil nutrient structure and watering needs. Pygmy date palms, whether grown indoors or outdoors, like consistently moist soils, but they should never be left in standing water. This makes watering a maintenance task that requires regular observation of the soil. To maintain a neat appearance and to promote healthy leaves, pygmy date palms require regular rinsing of the foliage. Rinse with a fine spray of lukewarm water either in the shower, or place your palm outside during summer rains. This rinsing keeps common pests such as scale, thrips and mites under control, and it also removes fertilizer salts that may damage the foliage. Fertilize the palm with balanced fertilizer, preferably specialized for palms. Potassium and magnesium are specific nutrients that cause leaf dieback if they are not available readily in the soil. Repeat the fertilizing treatment so that the palm has three applications within one year for a mature tree. Younger trees, such as seedlings, require fertilizing once a month.

Hoyas have thick, waxy leaves that overflow from a pot in beautiful trailing vines. They bloom in clusters of sweetly smelling flowers like those of their distant cousin, the milkweed. The flowers themselves are dense and waxy, like finely sculpted porcelain, often appearing in pink or white. Native to tropical Asia and Australia, they live a long time and will quickly become some of your favorite houseplants. Hoya prefers either bright indirect light or sunlight for no more than 2 to 6 hours per day. If you choose the sunny option, place your plant on an east- or west-facing windowsill rather than a south-facing one so that it receives rays only during the morning or late afternoon rather than at midday, when direct sun might burn its leaves. During the spring and summer months, water your hoya after the top third or so of its soil has dried out but before the mix is parched all the way downperhaps once per week, but that can vary with conditions. Irrigate it thoroughly enough that water runs from the drainage holes into the plant saucer, then discard the excess. In autumn and winter, cut back the watering to about once every 2 weeks. Some sources recommend 1 month without water during midwinter to spur the plant into blooming in spring. At any rate, never leave the plant sitting in water, such as in a container without drainage holes. It's a great plant to get if you want your house to feel like a jungle with the long vines, but also want extra color and liveliness. A Hoya is a combination between succulents and vining plants like a Pothos or Philodendron in the sense that they look like they're tropical plants, but they actually prefer to dry out, like a succulent.

Not only do they produce mouth-wateringly delicious fruit, passionfruit vines can also serve as a stunning camouflage over unsightly walls and fences. Position your passionfruit vine in full sun with protection from strong winds. In colder climates, choose a spot in front of north facing wall to utilise to radiated heat. The passion fruit is a vigorous, climbing vine that clings by tendrils to almost any support. It can grow 15 to 20 ft. per year once established and must have strong support. It is generally short-lived (5 to 7 years). Passionfruit vines grow extensive root systems so ensure the spot you choose to plant has plenty of space, free from weeds, competing plants and grass. They will also spread up to 10 metres squared so choose or build a structure that can accomodate it. Passionfruit vines can be trained to grow along your fence, on a trellis or over an arbour, just install some wire or mesh to support its tendrils. The nearly round or ovoid fruit, 1-12 to 3 inches wide, has a tough rind that is smooth and waxy and ranging in hue from dark purple with faint, fine white specks, to light yellow or pumpkin-color. Within is a cavity more or less filled with an aromatic mass of double walled, membranous sacs containing orange-colored, pulpy juice and as many as 250 small, hard, dark brown or black, pitted seeds. Bird's nest ferns (Asplenium nidus) are naturally epiphytic, meaning they grow on the surface of other plants. In their rainforest homes, they can be found growing high in the crooks of trees. They form a series of erect, spoon-shaped, bright green fronds that rise from a central rosette. Healthy plants can have fronds up to long, but bird's nest ferns kept as houseplants typically have fronds that grow only about feet long. These ferns have a slow growth rate. They're best planted in the spring, though houseplants generally can be started year-round. The key to a healthy bird's nest fern is providing it with ample warmth, humidity, and moisture. When growing it as a houseplant, one of the best places to situate a bird's nest fern is near a shower or tub in a bathroom where it will receive optimal humidity and warmth, though it must have a light source as well. The Champion's Bird's Nest does not like hot, dry conditions. Try to maintain at least some degree of humidity by misting regularly or relocating to steamier rooms. This plant is ideal for the bathroom or kitchen. Water thoroughly during the growing season but less so in the winter. Keep moist but do not allow to stand in water. Bird's Nest Ferns are best watered around edge, directly onto the soil, as pouring into the crown may cause it to rot.

Adenium desert rose plants are perfect specimens for the intrepid or novice gardener. These East African and Arabian natives are wonderful in the interior container garden or as warm climate additions to the patio display. Caring for desert rose plants requires a full sun location and well-drained soil. Properly mimicking their native regional conditions will garner plenty of rose-like blooms on an architectural marvel of a plant. South Florida gardeners can grow this as a small shrub.

Native to the rainforests of Southern Mexico and Guatemala, the Neanthe Bella Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) or Parlor Palm is known for its air purifying properties and ability to adapt to lower light conditions. Neanthe Bella is an attractive, easy care evergreen, perennial plant and a very popular houseplant. This tabletop palm can also grow outdoors year round in USDA zones 10 through 12. Its commonly known in the trade as the Neanthe bella palm and grown primarily for indoor use in containers, ranging in height from tall. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves of the Neanthe Bella Palm, so place this little beauty in a spot out of direct light. While it is tolerant of lower light conditions, you may notice leggy growth as a result, so a spot where it will receive bright indirect light a few feet removed from a southern, western, or eastern facing window is ideal. Neanthe Bella Palms prefer soil that is lightly moist, with a slight period of drought between waterings. Water when the top 1 - 2 inches of the soil are dry, likely every 7 - 10 days. Too much moisture in the soil can cause root rot, while too little can lead to brown and crispy leaves.

These fronds look lush and can grow up to a foot long, making them in need of enough space where they are displayed. These palms are also known as sentry or paradise palms. They are suitable for growing in USDA zones 9-11, but for those outside these ranges, Kentia palm plants make terrific container grown specimens. They can grow up to 40 feet (12 m.) in height but they are slow growers, and indoor Kentia palms typically max out in containers at fewer than 12 feet (3.6 m.). The plants are quite forgiving and tolerant of low light conditions, but do prefer an area that receives indirect light indoors. You can also choose to keep your plant outdoors during the warmer months in a somewhat shaded location. While the Kentia can tolerate temperatures down to 25 F. (-4 C.) and up to 100 F. (38 C.), it is best to bring the plant back indoors prior to winter and offer protection from excessive heat during the summer no direct sun.
