Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator. The period he created his art was known as the Belle epoque and his focus was on the decadence in Parisian society. This design advertised the fortnightly 'La Revue Blanche' avant-garde artistic and literary periodical that was founded in Belgium in 1889 by the Natanson brothers and moved to Paris when they did. There, they were among the first to recognize Toulouse-Lautrec's unconventional genius, and freely published his drawings in the magazine. They also became friends socially, and the artist became a frequent participant in the intimate gatherings at the home of one of the brothers, Thadee Natanson, whose wife Misa enjoyed the company of stimulating intellectuals, artists, and writers. It is Misa we see in this poster, and her rather unusual stance is explained by the fact that she is actually on skates. As one of the movers and shakers among the literary set, Misia was the most emancipated women of her generation. Toulouse-Lautrec, who could be mercilessly scathing, pays her homage with an entirely sympathetic portrayal

The period he created his art was known as the Belle epoque and his focus was on the decadence in Parisian society. This poster advertised the serialization in the magazine 'Le Matin' of the memoirs of Abbe Faure, entitled 'At the foot of the Gallows' (Au Pied de l'Echafaud). He was a chaplain at the prison of La Roquette and witnessed thirty-eight executions. One of Lautrec's rare nods to social realism, the posters stark composition and blood red and black color scheme underscore its grisly subject. The abbot's narrative is actually banal and repetitive, but Lautrec transforms it into riveting drama. With an eye to the sensational, he places the viewpoint in the lower left corner, exactly at the guillotine's lever, allowing the spectator to look up at the blade, across the neck notch and down into a basket opened to catch the severed head

An advertising poster for an ink manufacturer showing a gentleman and lady in a theater box enjoying a performance. Made for the American market and printed in English.

Museum quality giclee reproduction. Printed on 100% cotton archival paper.

Victor Joze's (Lautrec's friend) Babylone d'Allemagne is a series of satirical accounts of corruption and debauchery in Germany. Its title (not shown in this version before text) is an insulting reference to Berlin (the German Babylon). Lautrec's poster focused the spectator's attention an the hindquarters of four horses, the largest of which was also being closely observed by a caricature of the Kaiser standing in a guard box. The implications of this, along with the book's title, (not shown in this version) provoked a protest from the German ambassador to France and nearly caused an international incident. Lautrec refused to stop distribution of the poster, and as he had paid for it, the publisher was not able to stop the distribution himself.

This poster "The Twins" was designed for Stone & Kimballs literary magazine, "The Chap Book." This is considered the first Art Nouveau poster in America. The unusual perspective allows viewers to interprit what they see.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator. The period he created his art was known as the Belle epoque and his focus was on the decadence in Parisian society. For his friend and great Montmartre chansonnier, Aristide Bruant, Lautrec made several posters. Bruant was a strong, forceful, in many ways vulgar entertainer of intimate cabarets, the kind of places where fashionable society went 'slumming' for thrills. Lautrec catches the brutal quality and the disdain with which he treated his audiences. This design is one of the most imposing poster images of all time. The singer dominates the poster with as much authority as he commanded on stage, the red scarf forming an exclamation point. The thrust and power are achieved by fine draftsmanship, excellent colours, and bold composition.

This poster advertising confetti puts Toulouse-Lautrec's use of the 'spray' or 'splatter' technique to great effect. In a process pioneered by the artist himself, an ink-soaked brush would be held over the lithographic plate and rubbed against a grid, to produce a fine spray of droplets. The resulting effect could be one of great delicacy, used to add nuanced tones and subtle shading or, when applied with gusto, could create bolder and more dramatic results. For this technique Toulouse-Lautrec took inspiration from a decorative effect employed in Japanese lacquer: urushi or 'sprinkled' lacquer.

This one advertises Bruant's café-cabaret at the Eldorado on Boulevard de Strasbourg in Paris. Aristides Bruant was a satirical singer who is shown here as a powerful, almost menacing figure. The poster owes its impact to the simplicity of the outlines and the palette, which comprises solid blocks of five colours. During the 1890s Toulouse-Lautrec visited the cabarets of Montmartre in Paris, producing a series of images depicting its nocturnal population.

Lautrec embraced the idea of designing programs for the more experimental theatres, as well as posters advertising performances, such as La Gitane by Richepin at the Théâtre Antoine, portraying the thespians he was so taken with.
