Created in 1922 Eight Heads showcases Escher's ability to combine his background in graphic design and his interest in mathematics. After visiting the Alhambra in Spain Escher became fascinated with the geometric patterns of the Moorish tiles that decorated the palace. He would spend the rest of his life experimenting within this league of mathematics we know as tessellation where patterns in a confined area fit together perfectly without overlapping or gapping. This would be the influence behind one of his most famous works Eight Heads which features the profiles of eight unique characters all precisely measured on a single woodcut block that could be printed over and over while still fitting within its own dimensions. Although only the beginning of his journey M.C.Eschers early work would continue to define the possibilities of graphic arts and design.
