Morgan's second wife, Mary, modeled as the mother in this ideal look of summer on the bank of the river Arun in Sussex as a delightful Victorian family on a summer holiday. Encouraged by saints to lead the battle against the English to end the hundred-year war, Joan of Arc kneels in prayer with a forlorn look, contemplating heaven. The patron Saint of France is wearing Gothic armor and chainmail, holding a sword in both hands indicating she is ready for battle, and wearing a red skirt for courage. A powerful Medieval theme, skillfully martyred Joan is glowing in the gleaming highlights of Millais' remarkable skill. At eleven Millias was the youngest student to enter the Royal Academy Schools, and was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Embracing historical, literary and naturalist themes, in his later works, Millais, added his own brand of realism and used his family as models, selling the images to calendars and advertisements. The highlight of Paris in the Bella epoque era was the Grand Prix horse race at Longchamp. Afterward the fashionably dressed gathered for dinner at the Armenonville Pavilion, a sparkling restaurant on the shore of Bois de Boulogne, bringing together the many of the beautiful people and varied personalities and classes including the pictured notorious Spanish actress and dancer, La Bello Otero star of the Folies-Bergere. Gervex, sometimes considered an Impressionist, was also an academic and classically trained painter who favored larger works including wall panels. On one of his many travels, Gervex was commissioned to paint portraits of the Czar Nicholas II and the Russian royal family. Ariadne was the maiden daughter of King Minos of Crete who fell in love with Theseus and gave him the sword and ball of string to help him defeat the Minotaur. Before the handsome hero makes an appearance the resplendent beauty lounges idly, the Mediterranean in the background contrasts with azure blue sea and the hint of what she is capable of is shown in the red of her dress and poppies that represent passion, blood and her courage. This masterpiece represents part of a series of works by Frenchman Monet devoted primarily to the study of different light on the same subject at different times of day. Forsaken passion trembles within this riveting watercolor painting by Victorian artist, Burton. The painting is smaller than I had envisioned, but that's my fault. The dimensions were for the picture and the frame; I should have realized that. However, my husband thinks it's the perfect size for a wall in our living room. It replaced a framed photo of the Grand Canyon that we no longer noticed, and this Victorian watercolor is more apropos for our Arts & Crafts decor. Now I'm jonesing for "La Belle Dame Sans Merci," but that will have to wait due to the rising cost of living.. Art Nouveau. Flagstaff. Thu Jan 01 2026

Depicting Greek sculptor Pygmalion who fell in love with Galatea, his marble creation of beauty and perfection as witnessed by cupid with his bow in Pygmalion's realistically detailed studio. From Ovid's poem Metamorphoses, Gerome captured the moment Galatea is transformed from cold marble into an adored living woman at the moment of his passionate kiss. French artist, painter, sculptor and muralist, Jean-Leon Gerome created several versions of the same romantic subject - Pygmalion and Galatea - that inspired his realistically detailed, and classically influenced historical, mythological, and oriental themes. In Greek mythology, the Danaides were the fifty daughters of King Danus of Argos, who were married to the fifty sons of Aegypyus, a mythical King of Egypt, to save Argos. All but one of the Danaides killed their husbands on their wedding night, and in turn were killed. The illusion of movement is evident as the tragic sisters were forever condemned to carry water endlessly, filling a leaking bath to wash away their sins. A remote fishing village in Denmark, Skagen was a gathering place for many Danish, Norwegian and Swedish artists. This celebratory party was a gathering of many artists, and friends and an important woman painter, Anna Archer with her daughter along with Kroyer himself painted in the white suit. The guests raise their glasses in a champagne toast as the sunlight sparkles off the glasses and the light glints, reflecting off the surrounding leaves. The colors on this piece are vibrant and it is beautiful. I ordered the 22 x 28. This is the third framed artwork I've ordered from them and the only downside to these framed art pieces is the proportion size of the frame to the artwork. The frame is great quality, thick and substantial. But if you are ordering anything smaller than 20" its going to look huge against the picture. On a good note, the framing is awesome; they pay great attention to detail, provide hanging hardware, and even put little plastic pads on the back so it won't scuff your wall when you hang it.. The two gold crowns refer to the juxtaposition of the English Prince returning triumphant and victorious in his Gothic gold armor and crown contrasted to that of Christ's crown of thorns with a glowing golden halo. Jubilant and elated ladies toss flower petals and banners are flown but all the Prince can see is the reminder that riches, pride, and acclaim are fleeting things. Inspired by the Greek myth of a Corinthian girl who drew a portrait of her beloved, before he departed for war, by tracing the outline of his shadow on a wall to have an image to remember him. Leighton, exchanging the tale to a Gothic castle, altered it to Medieval dress, armor and a beautiful red-haired maiden, adding to the drama there are crusader ships waiting outside the castle walls. Leighton's work bridged the commercial and critical divide earning a place in the Victorians' hearts. Famous for his romantic and vivid Edwardian and Medieval compositions, artist Leighton drew inspiration from historic eras, literature, romance and the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand. This vivid image of a Valkyrie from Norse mythology chooses to fly into battle straddling the world between life and afterlife as a guide to Valhalla for fallen Viking warriors. This strange, seductive scene depicts a nubile rider grasping the great black wings of her flying steed shimmering in the moonlight mysterious and otherworldly amid the play of contrasting shapes, space and light and shadows created with gouache and pastels. Bouguereau was a master of portraiture, retaining the sitter's likeness, but beautifying the skin, features and colors; in this work he is showcasing the glowing sweetness and spirituality of the little girl, her large dark blue eyes and the perfection of her sweet clasped hands. French artist Bouguereau, was considered an Academic and traditionalist with modern interpretations of classical and mythological subjects. As a teacher, frescoesist and draftsman Bouguereau opened art to women and held coed classes. Popular with Victorian patrons in France and the United States, few could match Bouguereau's realistic figures touched with idealism. Bathers have become a major influence for artists over the ages, and as an admirer of Renaissance masterworks, Bouguereau drew inspiration from classic subjects. Here Bouguereau masterfully portrays these two as realistically proportioned, dark-haired mature women with golden flesh in a sinuous stylistic setting of luminous glowing seashore. French artist Bouguereau was a traditionalist and an Academic whose genre and mythological themes were interpretations of classical subjects with concentration on the female form. The idealized world of Bouguereau paintings brought to life goddesses, nymphs, bathers, shepherdesses and Madonna's in a way that appealed to the Victorian patrons in France and the United States. A significant moment of Biblis' life frozen in time is featured in this modern interpretation of a classical subject. This impeccable study of a woman illustrates the depth of Biblis' grief and loneliness after her twin brother has left her alone. From the Ovid, as the story goes, Biblis strips herself in her sorrow, wanting to kill herself but was saved and turned into a spring which is suggested by Bouguereau's skillful use of water echoing her reflection. Mesmerized by the steady, smoldering gaze of the lush young woman muse in La Sorgente, we barely notice the urgency of the water gushing from the rounded clay urn balanced on her shoulder. She is a "symbolic unity of woman and nature."
