"General Anthony Wayne" by Edward Savage is a famous portrait of Wayne. Wayne began his career as a surveyor and tanner before joining the Continental Army in 1776 as a colonel. His bold and aggressive tactics earned him the nickname "Mad Anthony." During the Revolutionary War, he played key roles in battles such as Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Stony Point, where his successful nighttime assault in 1779 boosted American morale. After the war, he served briefly in politics and later, in 1792, was appointed by President George Washington to command the Legion of the United States. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, which led to the Treaty of Greenville, securing much of the Northwest Territory (including present-day Ohio) for American settlement.
