The Sanskrt word for aureole is prabhavali, which translates to an extended quantum (‘vali’) of flame (‘prabha’). In terms of the visual arts, it captures the aura of the deity contained therein.The sculpture that you see on this page is a standalone prabhavali with a flat-topped plinth underneath it. The plinth is engraved with lotus petals along the edges, while its surface is carved with intricate vine and petal motifs. On either edge of the plinth stands an outward-facing peacock. The aureole emerges from the gorgeous plumage of these peacocks.Curvaceous lengths of vine that are a mirror image of each other. At its zenith is a front-facing peacock with its wings raised on either side of its body. Zoom in on the miniscule details such as the serrations on its slender body and the perfect symmetry of its plumage. From underneath the peacock dangles a bell, adding to the auspiciousness of the composition.
