The Attack On Fort Donelson By John Steeple Davis

"The Attack on Fort Donelson" by John Steeple Davis captures the Union assault on Fort Donelson, Tennessee, in February 1862 during the American Civil War. This battle marked a pivotal early victory for Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant, earning him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender” Grant. Davis’s composition emphasizes the chaos and intensity of the attack—Union soldiers surge forward through smoke-filled air, with vivid flashes of musket and cannon fire illuminating the battlefield. The fort, perched defensively above the Cumberland River, looms in the background as Union troops push past obstacles and wounded comrades. The painting combines historical detail with emotive realism, effectively conveying the fierce combat and high stakes of the campaign that opened the door for Union advances into the South.
