The creation of the goddess Durga takes place in the context of a cosmic crisis precipitated by a demon whom the male gods are unable to subdue. Although she is created by the male gods, she fights without direct male support against male demons and she always wins. Contrary to her image of a battle queen, peace and tranquility reflects on her face. Shown here with eight arms, she looks powerful, with each hand wielding a weapon. These weapons were gifted to her by individual gods when they created her. A dagger, trident, wheel, mace, bow etc. all weapons of offence are part of her iconic representation. She wears a crown and other jewellery befitting a goddess of her stature. Described as irresistible in battle, she rides a fierce lion. In order to depict power and ferocity, the lion's face is dis-proportionately larger than rest of his body. The open jaw, flared nostrils and bulging eye balls convincingly portray the nature of the beast which is tamed by goddess Durga and used as her vehicle.
