• In the earliest prototypes, the Darpanika had been attributed to the Yaksha-Yakshi cult of tree worshippers, alongside images like Hamsi, Shalabhanjika, and Ashoka Dohada. The Buddhist representations, which are said to have Hellenistic influences, inspired the image of the woman holding a mirror in Jain iconography, and it was finally in Hindu mythology that the Darpanika was pronounced with her own legend, taking place as the Darpana Dharini, one of the Surasundaris as noted in the Shilpa Prakasha. The beauty of Darpana Dharini translates feminine cosmic energy into a soulful reflection, which is manifested by gazing in the mirror.
• The mirror is therefore not only an aesthetic ornament but also a tool for psychological insight for example, in the hands of Parvati, the attribute of the mirror is understood as Prakriti, or nature, which reflects the essence of Shiva. It is a sad situation however that today, this rich legend is tainted in the simplistic classification of being called simply celestial figure or celestial nymphs.
