This mattress is firm with a slight flexible bounce, which is how my son likes a mattress. The pillow top part is not too soft, but can feel it. So far he finds it very comfortable. It is a tall mattress and we are using it on a tall metal frame (no need for a box spring!!!), so it is high off the floor (for young or old might be too tall, but works for us.) It came in a narrow, heavy box, vacuum sealed, and as soon as we cut a SMALL SLIT in the plastic the air slowly came out and the mattress started to inflate, and then we slowly cut the rest of the plastic to fully inflate. It was full height within minutes. Nice to easily get into the house and up the stairs. Much easier than the mattress we had to squeeze out of the house to remove!! I also like a black mattress.
