"Poker Game" by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was the first in what became Coolidge's signature series of dogs sitting around a table engaging in human activities. In this early work, several bulldogs and hounds are gathered for a serious game of poker. They're dressed in collars, seated upright, and fully engrossed in their hands, complete with cigars and stacks of chips. The absurdity and charm come from the contrast between the natural behavior of dogs and the high-stakes, human-like scenario they’re placed in. While originally created for commercial purposes (later works were commissioned by Brown & Bigelow for cigar advertisements in the early 1900s), Poker Game and the entire series gained cult status in American pop culture. Often viewed as kitsch, the paintings have also been reinterpreted as satirical takes on human vice, camaraderie, and competition.

"The Burning of the Gaspee" by Charles DeWolf Brownell captures a pivotal but often overlooked moment in the lead-up to the American Revolution. In the years leading up to the American Revolution, tensions between the American colonies and the British Crown steadily escalated due to unpopular taxes, trade restrictions, and aggressive enforcement of customs laws. One flashpoint occurred in Rhode Island, where the British Royal Navy deployed the HMS Gaspee to patrol Narragansett Bay and crack down on smuggling—a vital economic lifeline for many colonists. The ship’s commander, Lieutenant William Dudingston, became notorious for overstepping his authority, harassing local vessels, and conducting unwarranted searches. His actions enraged Rhode Islanders, who viewed him as a symbol of British overreach and abuse of power. On the night of June 9, 1772, the Gaspee ran aground near Pawtuxet while chasing a packet boat. Seizing the opportunity, a group of local patriots led by John Brown - rumored to be a member of the Sons of Liberty - assembled a raiding party of about 60 men, rowed out under cover of darkness, wounded Dudingston, and set the ship ablaze. The Gaspee Affair was one of the first violent acts of rebellion against British authority and helped galvanize colonial resistance. Its historical significance lies in how it foreshadowed the coordinated revolutionary action to come. The Crown’s failed attempt to punish the raiders—thanks to a wall of silence among colonists—only fueled resentment and led to the formation of the Committees of Correspondence, a key step toward uniting the colonies in the fight for independence.

“Arnold’s Battery A – 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery at Gettysburg” is a featured detail in Paul Philippoteaux’s monumental Gettysburg Cyclorama, a sweeping 377‑foot, 42‑foot‑tall circular oil-on-canvas panorama depicting Pickett’s Charge on July 3, 1863. Battery A, under Capt. William Arnold, held position on Cemetery Ridge near the “High-water mark” during Pickett’s Charge. This is a very unique set of three Gettysburg battlefield maps, depicting respectively the events of the first, second and third day of the battle, was compiled by John Bachelder and published in 1876 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Each frame consists of an identical base map of the natural and man-made features of the battlefield, upon which are superimposed the troop positions and movements for that day, with the Union forces shown in blue and the Confederates in red (on this assembled set the background tints vary sheet to sheet, though the base topographic data is identical). They are a very minute analysis of the deployment of the various units of both armies, with the names of commanding officers, period of time spent in a particular position, and other pertinent information is given. Dotted lines and arrows indicate the movements of the troops, and the positions at various times of the day are shown by symbols explained in the legend
