The metal frames are very solid which is why it can support up to 500 lb per cot. The first assembly was challenging, but subsequent assemblies were much easier since we knew how it went together. No tools were needed. We did try the bench option but didn't care for it due to the gap at the back where the second rod must rest. The cot itself was very comfortable and can be used as is with a sleeping bag. We also like that the cot can be used separately if desired.
