It can be color-glazed or clear-glazed, then re-fired, but stoneware is naturally durable without glazing. When fired to maturity, (whether glazed or not) stoneware is chip-resistant, impervious to water, and can withstand high and low temperature extremes, making it ideal for outdoor use.

The insoluble fiber acts just like rebar in concrete sidewalks and makes the concrete stronger but lighter than solid concrete, hence the name “concrete-lite.” Impervious to cracking or other adverse effects from repeated freezing and thawing when wet, these planters are suitable for unprotected year-round outdoor use.
