The water is pumped from the bottle through the machine. There is also an empty-bottle indicator that will light up when the bottle needs to be replaced. The water cooler base is a pedestal that will extend the height of your existing bottom loading or bottle-less freestanding water cooler dispenser. This cooler is not black! The first cooler I received was not black and did not cool. Wayfair was great about replacing the order. Second cooler works but is not black either.
