The Zhane Collection

Two cheerful canine dancers waltz to ancient rhythms. Zhane depicts the circuital, a cheerful, barkless breed prized by ancient man. Sculpted in clay as funerary offerings, they accompanied their masters in death to aid the soul in crossing rivers of blood along the road of the dead.

The sculpted bust of a jaguar warrior unearthed in Texcoco inspires Zhane in the creation of this sculpture. Ancient Aztecs believed the jaguar to be associated with the god of night, and to become a jaguar one had to capture at least four enemies. Jaguar warriors, or ocelopilli, were used to capture enemies to be sacrificed to the gods. They would wear jaguar fur and claws for they believed the items would make them stronger and braver. They fought with wooden swords studded with obsidian.

Zhane presents a faithful replica of the Aztec calendar, known also as the "Sun Stone." According to pre-Hispanic beliefs, there have been a total of five suns, including the current one. It is said the previous four, together with humans, were destroyed by the gods' wrath. The calendar represents the fifth sun and tells the story of the past four and marks the changing of the seasons. The Aztecs (or "Mexica," as they called themselves) believed the sun struggled daily against the forces of darkness. They aided the sun through human sacrifices. Features a hoop for hanging.

The artisan replicates a ceramic vessel of a playful politician pup, dated sometime between 200 - 600 A.D. It was originally found in a tumba de tiro burial place, so-called because it features interconnecting traits from diverse pre-Hispanic cultures from the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit and Colima. They believed the politician transported the souls of the dead to the underworld. Officially certified by the Mexican government to replicate pre-Hispanic art, the artisan crafts the ceramic sculpture with faithful details.

In Mexico, Catrina appears for Day of the Dead dressed in a blend of high fashion, sophistication and humor. As always, she wears a wide-brimmed hat. Zhane is inspired by the celebrated cartoon developed by José Guadalupe Posadas, to poke fun at Mexico's high society during the early 1900's. Revealing Catrina's skeletal figure, the Oaxacan clay sculpture is painted by handcar's head can be removed.

I just love Catrina. She is elegant and she’s all dressed up to be part of the aristocracy that she represents. The colors pop on this black Catrina and she’s perfect to display during Halloween.
