The Valcourt Collection

Carving sleek African sese wood, Valcourt creates a graceful duck. The hand painted image features richly textured aluminum on the wings. The artisan names her design Kpakpa – the Ewe word for "duck."

This simple but striking mask is the original design of Ghana's Anna Yawson. The elongated monkey face is hand-carved from native sese wood and painted in black and cornflower blue. Adoo means "monkey" in a dialect spoken by the Ga tribe of Ghana.

With arms upraised, she puts her hands together as though in prayer or celebration in a sculpture by Valcourt. She works in African sese wood to carve the stylized portrait, and adds the rich textures of embossed aluminum. She names her design Walayo, a Ga word which means "a woman who enjoys life."
