A gentle dove alights atop this handsome African mask. By Ghana's Abdul Aziz Mohamadu, it is carved and painted by hand, with applications of aluminum repoussé. "I named this original mask design Obi Nka Bi, an Akan phrase which means 'peace and harmony'," the artisan explains.

An imposing personage is at once beautiful and stern. Carved by hand from native sese wood, this Eshaan African mask is designed by Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo. She names it Dudzi, which means "victory" in the language of Ghana's Anlo-Ewe people. "When wrestlers from the Anlo tribe are given such masks, they usually marry into royal clans," she says. "Apart from being a decorative piece, this mask comes with my sincere wishes for victory and a blissful marriage."

This elegant African mask represents the art of Mali. Showing the characteristic downcast eyes and narrow, elongated features, its three antlers suggest the Bambara antelope tradition. Kobina Asmah carves the mask by hand and embellishes it with embossed brass and aluminum in a beautiful portrait of a Bambara woman.

Rita Addo Zakour demonstrates her creative skills with this delightful African mask. Covered by symmetrical motifs, the face represents a woman and arises from the artisan's own imagination. She names the piece Medofo pa, "My True Love" in the Twi language of Ghana's Akan people.

Inspired by the sankofa, a traditional Ghanaian adinkra symbol, Sinclair Yao Daley creates a colorful African mask. He carves the image from seasoned sese wood and adds earrings of multicolor cotton thread and recycled glass beads. Sankofa means "go back to your roots," a message conveyed through the form of a bird with its head tilted backward.
