I've never used vermiculite in our gas fireplace before, so I tried it and liked the snapping noise it made - or I am assuming that was what was making the noise. It sounded like a crackling fire - subtle but very nice. We liked it but as for our cat, he understandably didn't like the fire or the crackling sound - we all survived a house fire last year so he still has a bit of an issue with fire and heat.
