It's a heavy plastic/wood. Took a few minutes to understand the assembly instructions, but I bought 2 of them so after the 1st one I was able to figure out the other one. I'm 5'10" so it's a little lower than a standard chair but I am getting use to sitting on it. The top of the cousin probably will hit the top of your calves.
