This enchanting photograph captures the quintessential elegance of 1960s alpine leisure, featuring a group of women reclining on the snow in Gstaad with rugs covering their knees during the height of the Swiss resort's emergence as the premier winter destination for the international jet set. Photographed in 1963, this iconic image embodies the sophisticated après-ski culture that defined Gstaad's transformation from a quiet farming village into the most fashionable ski resort in Europe. The scene perfectly captures the era when fashion designers like Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges all began producing their own high fashion skiwear lines, dressing the likes of Sophia Loren and Princess Grace of Monaco as the Jet Set descended upon Alpine resorts. These elegant women, bundled in luxurious fur and wool against the pristine Alpine backdrop, represent the new breed of cosmopolitan socialites who made Gstaad synonymous with refined winter leisure, where the social scene rivaled the skiing itself in importance and glamour.
Slim Aarons, renowned for his evocative photographs of, as he described it, "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places," was the quintessential chronicler of high society. After serving as a war photographer, Aarons turned his lens to a new landscape: the glamorous lives of Hollywood elites, Palm Beach socialites, and jet-setting debutantes and princes. His work for society publications captured an aspirational world of leisure and luxury that defined the American upper class throughout the mid-20th century, creating images that remain timeless symbols of sophistication and style.
Every piece in our unique Slim Aarons collection is meticulously handcrafted using archival materials and printed on premium, luster photographic paper with environmentally safe inks, custom framed by skilled artisans who ensure that each work of art meets the exacting standards befitting such an iconic photograph.
