The bowl is made of rusting (carbon) steel, which comes from the factory "shining" and starts rusting when it gets out of the box. Usually, this natural process takes a couple of weeks. Orren Ellis Deco products are made of high-quality metal and the rusting process may take up to two months. The rusting process would start faster by dipping a bowl into salted water.

I am charmed by the interesting lines and complex rust patterns on this fire pit we use on our lakeside patio. Because the designer omitted a drain hole, between uses, I empty the ash and turn the bowl upside down to prevent rain from collecting in the bowl.
