The corner of the balcony visible at lower left in this composition indicates Renoir’s vantage point overlooking the bay of Naples. His position afforded an iconic view of the harbor with the volcano Mount Vesuvius in the background, wafting smoke into the sky. Inspired by the southern Italian light, Renoir painted another version of this vista at a different time of day (The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass.). James Duncan, a wealthy sugar refiner, purchased the present work in 1883, making it the first Impressionist picture acquired by a Scottish collector.

Two Sisters or On the Terrace is an 1881 oil-on-canvas painting by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The dimensions of the painting are 100.5 cm × 81 cm. The title Two Sisters (French: Les Deux Sœurs) was given to the painting by Renoir, and the title On the Terrace (French: Sur la terrasse) by its first owner Paul Durand-Ruel.

Renoir spent part of the summer of 1881 at the country home of his patron Paul Berard in the small Normandy village of Wargemont. During his stay, Renoir painted two similar still lifes in contrasting color harmonies, showing the family’s faïence jardinière piled high with peaches. Berard purchased the present work for himself; the other version (61.101.12) was featured in the seventh Impressionist exhibition the following year.
