Fortunately the color was beige as described and not yellow as the first picture looked. my previous Wayfair rug came rolled up and spread out nicely. This one was folded up in a rectangle and was harder to unfold and remove creases & buckles. It does look nice, but still needs to flatten out more.. Esther. Goshen, IN. Fri Jan 16 2026

Rooted in the French Aubusson Savonnerie tradition this hand knotted wool rug is built around a classic oval medallion centered on a warm rose and coral field. The style itself traces back to the royal workshops of 17th century France where weavers developed a distinctly European approach to rug making centered on elaborate floral compositions and medallion layouts. The medallion here is worked in ivory and filled with delicate florals and leafwork that sits very much within that vocabulary. The surrounding field carries the same floral energy with bouquets and botanical clusters spilling across the ground toward a generously worked ivory border detailed in sage aqua and soft blue. The palette of rose ivory aqua and sage gives it a softness that feels distinctly French in character. The plush pile adds to that sense of richness with a depth of texture that is very much in keeping with the traditional Savonnerie aesthetic. Hand knotted on a cotton foundation from superior quality wool the construction reflects the same attention to detail that the design calls for.Story Behind the Art: French needlepoint rugs originated in 17th18th century France famously crafted in Aubusson and Savonnerie workshops for royal and aristocratic interiors. Featuring floral medallions and elegant scrollwork they were hand-stitched onto canvas using fine petit and gros point techniques. These rugs were heavily influenced by classical European art featuring floral medallions scrollwork garlands and pastel palettes. They were often used in palaces chteaux and salons woven with meticulous craftsmanship using the petit point and gros point techniques. By the late 20th century China became a major producer of French-style needlepoint rugs. Using centuries-old weaving and embroidery skills Chinese artisans began replicating Aubusson and Savonnerie designs on a global scale. These rugs are hand-stitched or handwoven often using wool on cotton canvas and maintain the look of antique French originals at more accessible price points.
