The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This exquisite secretary desk was handcrafted by artisans in Guangdong. The front panel, sides, and drawer faces are finished in beautiful black lacquer, hand painted with delicate gold accents and a lovely Ching Ming Festival design scheme. The front drops down to form a desktop, complete with a practical configuration of shelves and drawers.

Just what I wanted. I'd been looking for about a year at all kinds of Chinoiserie secretary style desks including the full height ones (Like 7 feet) with the cabinet section above. But in the end I'm glad I chose this one. It has a nice amount of storage both in the drawers and in the vertical slots behind the door.
