Functional; saves a lot of time at crabapple harvest from Minneapolis, MN on 09/11/2014 – Verified Buyer
For many years, I have made crabapple jelly, crabapple butter and tomato sauce by first cooking the fruit, then running it through a chinois or Foley mill, then (for the jelly) filtering the juice through a muslin bag. It's a tedious process, especially in that the chinois or Foley mill has to be emptied of pulp repeatedly. This year I got a steam juice extractor and a Roma strainer, and the process became vastly easier and quite a bit quicker. The delight of this type of strainer is that the usable pulp comes down the side chute as the waste comes out the axial cone --- this is a continuous-flow process, so it's much quicker. This specific model works well, and I like it. The spiral leaves a fairly large gap at the base, so a wad of unprocessed fruit accumulates there unless you deliberately poke something like a chopstick in repeatedly to encourage it forward. The fit of the side chute is a bit fussy, so it doesn't snap on quickly and easily. There is no easy way to get at the surface of the screen/cone on the back side -- so getting the last bit of pulp at the end of a run is a chore. The pusher is a cheap plastic thing, but it gets the job done (I may make a wooden one). A nice feature is that it has both a suction base and a clamp --- I can use it one way on my granite prep table and the other way on my picnic table. A supplemental set of three screens is available --- so if you want to use it for something like elderberry jam or salsa, you can do so. You can even buy a motor drive for it, if you expect to do really large batches and fear you'll grow (hand-)cranky. This has enabled a satisfying routine. From 15 pounds of crabapples with minimal prep (remove stems and cut in half), the steam juicer produces 7-9 cups of clear, flavorful juice. The residual pulp has enough remaining flavor that I can run it through the Roma strainer and almost effortlessly get enough puree to make several pints of crabapple butter. The whole process takes perhaps a third as long as the traditional method. Although there are features I might have designed differently, this is very serviceable and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

The Roma Sauce Maker & Food Strainer is a big help to me ! from New Britain, CT on 12/30/2014 – Verified Buyer
I use to try to unseed and peel my tomatoes by hand and end up with bitter sauce sometimes but with this handy gadget I can easily strain my tomatoes. The only downside to the ROMA SAUCE Maker is it is quite difficult to put together but once you have it together it works great and you do not have to use electricity.

Roma Sauce maker & food strainer from Port Allegany, PA on 11/10/2014 – Verified Buyer
The Roma Sauce machine worked great. Made my job of turning my home grown tomatoes into homemade spaghetti sauce. The handle came out a few times and the spiral doesn't go all the way in. But, it still worked great and I would highly recommend it. Price was great also. I found the same one locally and it was 89.99.

Ordered for my Mother-In-Law for Christmas. I know she'll absolutely love it because my parents use this juicer, and say it gets the job done quicker, and is very easy to use! The fact that it came in so quickly also is a plus. I have it wrapped and under my tree, and its not even Thanksgiving yet!

Had one of these when my kids were little and wore in out! Just bought this one to have available for all my adult kids to borrow at applesauce time.... and we get some jars of delicious sauce "as rent!"
