"Hi Jack, The entire rope is 36" long and has a length of chain at the top of rope to attach it to the swing set. It isn't designed to be hung from a tree but should not be a problem as long as the branch is very thick and sound."

Happy Grandma from Santa Maria, CA	5.0 5/30/2011 Satisfied customer. I bought this as a gift for my grandson. I was very pleased with the quality and construction, however, I was surprised to find chain attached to the rope where the swing would attach to some type of support. Since we intended to hang the swing from a big tree we had to re-think it. We ended up tying caribiners to the tree and this is working out quite well.
