One Week to Spring Clean Your Home (and Keep It Sparkling)

Seven days, seven rooms, one hour a day. Yes, it really is that simple.

Everybody loves clutter-free counters and perfectly organized closets. But deep cleaning and organizing your entire home—who’s got the time?! Finish your spring cleaning in a week by tackling one space each day—and then keep them that way with our editors' storage solutions. Best of all, these tips take only an hour (or less).

Day 1: The Entryway

Speed Clean Routine:  Set a welcoming tone for your home with a dirt and clutter-free entryway. Sweep the floor, wipe down door handles, shake out runners and floor mats, and give smudged windows a quick wash.

Storage Essentials:  The key to staying organized is creating a landing spot for every item—try a coat tree, shoe rack, or mail organizer. If square footage is at a premium, go vertical with wall hooks. For larger spaces, opt for a storage bench to provide seating while wrangling with shoes, or a console table to stash everyday necessities.

Speed Clean Routine:  Start at the sink. Fill the basin with hot soapy water and drop in greasy and grimy kitchen items like the microwave turntable and toaster oven tray. While they're soaking, wipe down countertops, the interior of small appliances, and the exterior of the stovetop and fridge. Once complete, wash everything in the sink and give the floor a final sweep.

Storage Essentials:  Add storage space and keep countertops clear with cabinet organizers, floating shelves, and a small rolling island or cart.

Speed Clean Routine:  For the space that often serves as the clutter catchall, start by returning misplaced items to their proper homes. Then vacuum the floor, making sure to get under furniture and between sofa cushions (goodbye pesky crumbs). Finish up by wiping windows and surfaces clean—don't forget the TV remote!

Storage Essentials:  Make midweek cleaning a breeze by organizing blankets and pillows in decorative bins and baskets. Corral unsightly entertainment accessories in decorative trays or boxes. For even more space, stash away items in a storage ottoman.

Speed Clean Routine: It's nobody's favorite, but it has to be done. Starting from the ground up, sweep and mop the floor. Bleach and scrub the toilet, tub, and sink, and wipe down mirrors. Finally, clean out the medicine cabinet or linen closet, throwing away anything that's expired or you haven't touched in over a year.

Storage Essentials:  Tidy shower essentials with caddies and organizers. Give personal hygiene products a place to live either on wall-mounted shelves or an over-the-toilet cabinet. If you have closet space, organize items by purpose in bins.

Speed Clean Routine:  Give your sleep space a breath of fresh air. Vacuum floors, dust fan blades, and wipe down dressers and nightstands. Bonus: clean air purifier filters to ease seasonal allergies and the interior of humidifiers to fend off pesky mold. Then streamline your bedding; wash and swap out winter bedspreads for lighter spring options like bamboo sheets and quilts.

Storage Essentials:  Keep your bedroom polished at all times with trinket dishes, and baskets to store extra bedding. Create a cohesive closet with matching hangers, and organize foldables in bins. If you have the time, tidy your wardrobe with an easy-to-install closet system.

Speed Clean Routine:  Whether you have a formal dining area that's only used occasionally or a casual eat-in kitchen that hosts family every day, it won't take long to whip it into shape. Vacuum floors and upholstery, wipe and polish eating surfaces, and dust nooks and crannies.

Storage Essentials:  Keep serving dishes looking pristine and table linens organized with a buffet—this must-have also doubles as a makeshift bar. If you have a larger dining room, add a china cabinet to display dishware and family heirlooms.

Day 7: The Playroom

Speed Clean Routine:  To get rid of germs, remove all toys from their current homes—including those on the floor—and separate out by type (plush, metal, or plastic). Place stuffed animals in the wash on delicate and set aside to air dry. Disinfect plastic and metal toys on the top shelf of the dishwasher, and anything else with warm soapy water. Then, vacuum the floor and wipe down germ hot spots like light switches and doorknobs. Complete your cleanse by returning every bear, brick, and book to its proper home.

Storage Essentials: Make quick cleanups easy (even for the little ones) with a catchall toy box, storage bins labeled with pictures, and a bookcase to corral everything from extra toys to story-time essentials. To limit the mess, give kids a designated place to play with a table or floor mat.
