Circa date: First quarter of the 20th century – the rich color of this luxurious red carpet has remained brilliant since its creation in the first quarter of the 20th century. This room-sized antique Persian Kashan rug is fit for a palace, but it is small enough for the home or office. Featuring bold reds, this antique Persian rug is a truly spectacular sight to behold. The design of the city rug combines elements of both a medallion with pendants and an overall field design, making this classic traditional rug a truly unique treasure from a design perspective. The design has both horizontal and vertical symmetry that is apparent in both the field and the main borders. This impressive antique room-size rug has formal corners in the field, but they are not carried out in the manner of traditional bracketed corners. Instead, the artist has chosen to place a traditional motif called a boteh in them. Several paisley boteh motifs can also be found throughout the field and incorporated within some of the floral design elements. The boteh is what is known modernly as the paisley and literally translates as bush or shrub. It has been used as a traditional symbol to mean many things throughout Asian and Near Eastern cultures.
