Dining Chair Height & Table Compatibility

chart indicating table height with dining chair height, 18 to 23 inches for a standard-height table and 24 to 26 inches for a counter-height table

When choosing new dining chairs, seat height is a key measurement that'll help you create a comfortable dining experience. The correct chair seat height, which is measured from the floor to the seat rather than the total height of the chair, is best determined by the height of your dining table.

Standard-Height Dining Chairs

Standard-height dining chairs measure 18" – 23" tall and pair well with standard-height tables that are 28" – 30" high.

Counter-Height Dining Chairs

Counter-height dining chairs are 24" – 26" high and work with counter-height tables that are 34" – 36" tall.

Clearance

You should allow for at least 12" of space between the seat of your chair and the bottom of your table or counter. If your table has an apron, there should be 7" of space between the top of the seat and bottom of the apron. If dining chairs have armrests, make sure that there's at least 7" of space between the chair arms and the bottom or apron of the table so you can slide chairs in and out with ease.

You can check a chair's seat height and arm height under the "Weights & Dimensions" tab on the product page or browse one of these size categories.

Dining Chair Width

The average dining chair width is 19" – 20", though this width can vary by the dining chair's style or features.

When determining the right dining chair width to complement your table, you should consider how much space each diner should have. Each guest should have 24" – 26" of eating space and an additional 6" of space between chairs to allow for elbow room and to get in and out from the table. Each guest should get between 30" – 32" of room total.

How to Calculate How Many Chairs Fit Per Side:

1. Measure the length of your table (from one leg to another) in inches
2. Divide that by 32". For shorter dining tables,
3. The result equals the number of chairs that fit per side

For shorter dining tables, you might want to go with narrower dining chairs (less than 19" wide) so you can fit more chairs on each side. For longer tables, you might be able to go with wider dining chairs (over 21") for enhanced comfort and seat room.

Replacing your current dining chairs? Measure your chairs at their widest point to determine a suitable width for new dining chairs. Depending on the style of the chair, this can mean measuring the seat or the chair back. Arms can also add a few inches to the overall width of a single dining chair. If space is limited, you may opt for armless dining chairs or only use dining chairs with arms at the head and foot of the table to conserve space.

Seat-to-Table Ratio

Maintaining a comfortable seat-to-table ratio ensures that each person has enough room around the dining table. This illustration above demonstrates the average number of dining chairs you can fit around different size or shape dining tables when adhering to the seat spacing tips mentioned in the previous section. Please note this is for average-size dining chairs – dining chairs wider than 20" might impact how many seats you can fit comfortably around a particular table.
