1. Consider the Total Bar Stool Height
When choosing the right bar stool sizes, the first thing to consider is the height and how this can impact the look and comfort level of your seating. The total height of a bar stool refers to the measurement from the floor to the top of the backrest. These fall into three categories:
- Backless stools: Typically measure 24" – 30" total height, offering the lowest profile
- Low-back stools: Add 8" – 12" above the seat height for modest back support
- Full-back stools: Add 15" – 20" above the seat height for maximum lumbar support
Each of these come in any seat height. When choosing a total bar stool height, focus on style and comfort. If you plan to use the bar stools a lot, you may prefer a stool with a full back for ample lumbar support.

If you want low-back or full-back bar stools with armrests, make sure the arms are low enough to fit under the counter overhang. Make sure that there's at least 2" of clearance space between the bottom of the tabletop and the top of the armrests so the bar stools can slide in and out comfortably.

A bar stool's seat width can directly impact how many stools you can fit along your bar or kitchen island. The three common bar stool widths are:

- 21" (wide): Best for extended seating and maximum comfort
