1. Consider the Total Bar Stool Height

When choosing the right bar stool sizes, the first thing to consider is the height and how this can impact the look and comfort level of your seating. The total height of a bar stool refers to the measurement from the floor to the top of the backrest. These fall into three categories:

  • Backless stools: Typically measure 24" – 30" total height, offering the lowest profile
  • Low-back stools: Add 8" – 12" above the seat height for modest back support
  • Full-back stools: Add 15" – 20" above the seat height for maximum lumbar support

Each of these come in any seat height. When choosing a total bar stool height, focus on style and comfort. If you plan to use the bar stools a lot, you may prefer a stool with a full back for ample lumbar support.

Tip!

If you want low-back or full-back bar stools with armrests, make sure the arms are low enough to fit under the counter overhang. Make sure that there's at least 2" of clearance space between the bottom of the tabletop and the top of the armrests so the bar stools can slide in and out comfortably.

2. Find the Right Bar Stool Seat Height

Bar stools come in four standard seat-height dimensions: short, counter-height, bar-height, and extra tall. Each stool height is meant to be paired with a specific table height.

To determine which you need, simply measure the height of your tabletop or kitchen counter and reference the image above. No matter what table height you have, there should always be 10" – 12" of space between the bar stool seat and the bottom of the counter or table so that you can sit comfortably. Tip!

For a flexible alternative, choose an adjustable-height bar stool. They are outfitted with hydraulic pumps that move the seat up or down to create comfortable seating for all.

3. Measure for Bar Stool Width

A bar stool's seat width can directly impact how many stools you can fit along your bar or kitchen island. The three common bar stool widths are:

  • 15" (narrow): Compact and space-saving, ideal for smaller counters
  • 17" (standard): Fits most spaces comfortably
  • 21" (wide): Best for extended seating and maximum comfort

To find out how many bar stools you can reasonably fit, measure the width of your counter or bar and keep this number in mind while browsing for bar stools. Quick formula: Divide your counter width by 28" to estimate how many standard stools will fit comfortably.

We recommend leaving 26" – 30" between the centers of each bar stool. This leaves at least 6" between each seat so you can easily get into and out of your seat and not bump elbows with anyone. Wider stools should have even more room between seats – we suggest leaving 8" – 10" between stools that are 19" – 22" wide.

Tip!

Allow for at least 12" – 18" of knee space between the chair's edge and the bar or counter. Make sure to account for the additional width of a bar stool's arms. If you're tight on space, armless bar stools can help you maximize your kitchen counter or bar table. To learn more about bar stool designs and features read our guide on Types of Bar Stools.
