DIY Modern Wall Art
Create an eye-catching piece of art for your home with these simple DIY instructions.
Dig an old frame out of storage and bring it back to life with this easy DIY! You probably already have all of the supplies in your home. In three easy steps, we created a painting to fit a cheery, eclectic modern space. Recreate the look with our instructions below!
What You'll Need:
- Frame
- Matting (optional)
- Painter's tape
- Piece of paper
- Paintbrush
- Acrylic paint (White paint in 5 to 10 colors)
Test paint colors on a scrap piece of paper to make sure they complement each other. A foolproof option is colors in the same family on the color wheel, or shades of one hue. Create a more dynamic painting by pairing colors that are on opposite ends of the color wheel, such as orange and blue, red and green, or violet and yellow.
We chose paint colors based on the decor and palette of the living room. We used two shades of the following colors: teal, pink, green, yellow, and gray.
Step 1:
- Remove the painting from the frame
- Return the painting to storage
- Set frame and matting aside for later
- Find a piece of white paper large enough to fill your frame
Tip! White butcher paper is inexpensive and easy to find at craft stores.
Step 2:
- Using several pieces of painter's tape, create triangles and other geometric shapes on the paper. These can vary in width, height, and size.
- The light grip of the painter's tape makes it easy to pick up and move lines. This allows you to play around with the shapes before finalizing the design.
Step 3:
- With acrylic paint, fill in the shapes. Repeat each color at least twice.
- Carefully dab the paint along the tape to ensure the shapes have crisp, clean edges.
- Before the paint dries (about five minutes after you've finished painting), peel the tape off and throw it away. This helps avoid any chipping. Let paint dry.
- Place the new painting and old matting into the frame, then hang on the wall or lean on a shelf.
