Light and Bright Bedroom Makeover

See how swing arm wall lamps and new curtains bring lightness to this master bedroom.

When I moved in with my husband two years ago, everything was just as the builders had left it: blank beige walls, boring light fixtures, and nondescript carpeting.

We've slowly been working our way through the condo one room at a time, but we kept putting off our bedroom since we're the only ones who ever go in there. At long last, we've taken our bedroom from a dark, lackluster space to a bright room reminiscent of our favorite boutique hotels!

Our condo doesn't get a lot of light, especially during the winter months. So it was important to us that we find ways to bring extra brightness into the room. We painted the walls white and traded in our dim table lamps for swing arm wall lamps.

While these were just two of the changes we made, they have the biggest impact on how the space feels! Instead of bumping our way into the bedroom just before bed, we curl up in there a couple of hours early, to read and talk. Being able to read in bed is a new luxury, since our old lamps gave off such diffused light.

Aside from function, the wall lamps heighten the elegance of the bedroom. We call them the "earrings" of the space because they complete the look and pull everything together. Since we created a little workspace for my husband next to his side of the bed, the lamps serve a dual function as bed and desk lighting!

Sheer curtains, framed by black versions, also help let lots of sun in, while maintaining privacy.

Now we no longer avoid the bedroom when showing people around the house! And every time we bring someone in, they comment on the incredible light—even on the cloudiest of days.
