How to Remove a Door Knob
What You Will Need
- Screwdriver
Step 1: Remove the Door Knob
On the interior side of the door, use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the door handle in place. Pull the handle from both sides to remove it from the door. Place them to the side.
Step 2: Remove the Rosette
If the rosette (the decorative mount that connects the actual knob to the door) does not come off with the knob in the previous step, you will need to remove it separately. Gently wedge the tip of your screwdriver under the rosette to remove.
Step 3: Remove the Latch Plate
Unscrew the knob’s latch plate from the side of the door. Then remove the knob’s latch from the jamb hole and set aside.
Tip!
If your new door knob comes with a strike plate for the door frame, be sure to switch out the old one and replace it with a new one using a screwdriver.

How to Remove a Deadbolt
What You Will Need
- Screwdriver
Step 1: Remove the Deadbolt
From the interior side of the door, remove the screws holding the deadbolt together with a screwdriver. If you have a decorative deadbolt plate, remove this as well. Using two hands, pull both sides of the deadbolt apart from the door. Place it to the side.
Step 2: Remove the Bolt Plate
Remove the screws holding the bolt plate to the door. Remove the plate and pull the bolt out of the door jamb. Place it to the side.
