Step 1: The most important step to keeping your suede or microsuede couch looking like new is vacuuming. For easy maneuvering, use a handheld vacuum to get into all the nooks and crannies. You may also want to purchase a vacuum that includes an upholstery attachment. These attachments cover a wide surface area and typically have a thin strip of fabric that catches dust. Do your best to vacuum your suede couch at least once a month for a thorough clean.
Step 2: Use a nylon brush to remove any spots of dirt or food that are matted down and weren't removed with vacuuming. The brush can penetrate deep into the fibers to loosen up any debris. Lightly brush the spot in small circles or repeatedly in one direction. Use the vacuum again and remove anything brought to the surface. When you are finished, rebrush the area, stroking in the same direction for a uniform look. This step should be done once a week.
Step 3: Do your best to address spills immediately to prevent permanent stains. First, reference the manufacturer's instructions for which types of cleaners can safely be used on your suede or microsuede couch. The instructions may look like the following:
W: Only water-based detergents are allowed.
S: Only dry, solvent-based cleaners may be used.
S/W: Both water-based and dry, solvent-based cleaners are allowed.
X: Only vacuuming is allowed; further cleaning will have to be done by professionals who specialize in cleaning couches with this description.
When a spill occurs, blot it with a clean, dry cloth to absorb the moisture. Lift up as you blot to avoid pressing the liquid deeper into the fabric. Blot from the outside inward to prevent a ring from forming. Now apply a special suede cleaner or some vinegar onto a soft rag (in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions). Use this to dab the spot more thoroughly. Let this dry, and repeat if the stain persists.
Step 4: Have your suede couch professionally cleaned annually. Follow up the cleaning with a protective spray to prevent future stains and spots.
