Your Guide to Styling Curtains
You can transform the look of your room by the way you choose to style the curtains.
Your choices about styling curtains can determine the level of light in a room, as well as the perceived height, openness and decorating style of the room. And there are plenty of options to consider. Learn how to style curtains here.
Darken the Room
In some rooms, such as the bedroom, you may want your curtains to keep the light out. In that case, look for lined, blackout curtains. You can find them in almost any color and by darkening the room, you can accomplish the look you're after – or the sleep you need.
When you want to draw light in from the windows, select sheer curtains. You can find sheers in almost any style of curtain. Rather than blocking light, they let it shine through, while still providing a stylish window dressing to finish your room.
Roman shades provide window cover with a classic, uncluttered look. You never have to worry about strings or curtains hanging to the floor or getting in the way of furniture or walking space. In smaller spaces, Roman shades provide classic window treatment without taking up any space in the room.
What if you can't decide between traditional curtain panels and Roman shades? Consider combining both of the looks you love. For example, the Roman shades might offer sheer cover for sunlight, while the curtain panels allow you to completely close off the outside world when you choose.
White, gray, and other neutrals may be among the most popular colors for curtains, but they aren't the only options. Sometimes curtains in a bold color can make a lovely statement for your room. Bright, bold curtains can be an especially strong choice when the other fixtures in the room are more subdued or neutral.
Who says you have to choose just one curtain color or style for your room? If you can't decide, think about layering multiple curtain colors, fabrics, or patterns. Choose two or more curtains that complement each other in color or pattern, and hang them side by side. You may love the one-of-a-kind result.
One of the best things about curtains is their ability to help draw the eye to where the decorator wants it to go. For example, if you want to create the illusion of higher ceilings, hang your curtains high above the windows. Higher-hung curtains will draw the eye up and make the ceilings appear taller.
