Before You Start Replacing a Bathtub Faucet

There are a few things you'll need to do before you can start the bathtub faucet replacement process.

Choose the Right Replacement Faucet

The first step to replacing your bathtub faucet is to choose the correct replacement. There are three main types of bathtub faucets:

• Deck-mounted faucets are mounted on the top of the bathtub itself.
• Wall-mounted faucets are mounted in the wall above the bathtub.
• Floor-mounted faucets are mounted on the floor at one end of the bathtub and are tall enough to pour water into the bathtub. They require a water line to be installed in the floor.

Check to see which type of faucet your bathtub currently has and make sure you select a faucet of the same type for your replacement. In addition, if your current faucet has one handle, select a new one with one handle. If your current faucet has two handles, select a replacement with two handles.

Gather Your Tools

Before you start replacing a bathtub faucet, it's important to gather all of the tools you'll need.

• Flat-head screwdriver
• Phillips-head screwdriver
• Socket wrench
• Allen wrench
• Pipe wrench

How to Replace a Bathtub Faucet

Now that you've prepped for the project, use our step-by-step instructions on how to replace a bathtub faucet.

1. Shut Off the Water Supply

Before detaching any parts of your bath hardware, shut off the water supply to the house to prevent water from leaking or spraying.

2. Remove the Existing Faucet

Start by removing the existing faucet. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the plastic cover of the handle. Check to see if the handle requires a flat-head or a Phillips head screwdriver, and use the appropriate one to unscrew the handle, then wiggle the handle to pull it off.

3. Loosen the Faucet Stem

Use a socket wrench, turning counterclockwise, to loosen the nut of the bathtub faucet stem. When the stem is loose, pull it free.

4. Remove the Spout

Next, remove the spout. Start by removing the screw at the bottom of the spout with an Allen wrench or the appropriate screwdriver and then pull the spout from the wall using both hands. If your spout is threaded, you will need to use a pipe wrench. Tighten the wrench securely around the spout, and then turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the spout until it is free.

5. Add the New Faucet Handles

Install your new bathtub faucet handles by putting the new stem in the hold and turning it clockwise to tighten. Once it is secured, tighten it with a socket wrench. Next, slide the new handle over the stem and tighten the screw to secure the handle to the stem.

6. Add the New Spout

Finally, install the new spout by putting it in place and turning it clockwise until it is secure. Tighten it with a wrench or pliers. Make sure the spout is pointing straight down into the tub so the water will only go into the tub. If necessary, apply caulk around the base of the spout.

7. Turn the Water Supply On & Test the New Faucet

When all the fixtures are in the right place, turn on the water supply to your house and try out your new bathtub faucet.
