How to Hang Curtains Without Drilling

Tension Rods
One of the easiest ways to hang curtains without drilling is by using tension rods. Tension rods are renter-friendly and similar to shower curtain rods in that they're adjustable, so they can expand to the width you need. The best part? They take only minutes to install.
1. Assemble the Curtain Rod: Most tension rods come with two rod components and an internal spring mechanism – depending on the manufacturer, you may need to put the spring inside the larger of the two rod pieces before inserting the smaller rod inside. Longer tension curtain rods have extra rods that you can add or take away to accommodate the width of the window frame.
2. Test the Curtain Rod: Test your curtain rod by positioning one of the ends along the top side edge of the window frame. You may need to push inward with the other end of the rod in order to achieve a snug fit against the frame. If the rod is too large, remove a portion of the adjustable rod. Add or take away portions of the rod until it securely fits.
3. Remove the Tension Rod: Remove the tension rod from your window frame in order to add your curtains. Place them toward the middle so you can easily maneuver your tension rod without them falling off.
4. Fit the Tension Rod Inside the Window Frame: Insert your tension rod so that each end rests snugly against the sides of your window frame. Then, you’re all done!
Magnetic Rods
Another great way to hang curtains without drilling is by using magnetic curtain rods. These rods use magnets to adhere to metal surfaces, which makes them perfect for metallic doors or wall space. Magnetic rods are easy to install and are available in adjustable widths.
1. Clean the Installation Area: To start, take a damp paper towel to clean the spots where you plan to install a magnetic curtain rod. Rubbing alcohol works best but you can also use water in a pinch. Then dry the spots with a dry paper towel.
2. Remove the Magnet Covers: The magnet covers are usually located on the mounting brackets on each side of the curtain rod.
3. Put on the Curtains: Put the curtains on the rod and insert the rod back onto the mounting brackets.
4. Place the Curtain Rod on the Magnetic Surface: Next, simply place your curtain rod on the magnetic surface. For non-magnetized areas, you can always add heavy-duty adhesive magnets to your walls. Afterward, use a level to ensure that the curtain rod is horizontally flat.
Twist and fit rods combine the style of a traditional curtain rod with the functionality of a tension rod. Twist and fit rods are a simple way to hang curtains without needing tools for installation.
1. Fit the Rods Together: Start by fitting the rods together (unless they come pre-attached). There should be a slightly smaller rod that fits into the larger rod, which has the spring mechanism inside.
2. Put the Curtains on the Rod: Gather them in the center to prevent the curtains from falling off during installation.
3. Insert Your Curtain Rod: Place one end of the curtain rod in the top side edge of the window frame. Repeat this process on the other side of the window frame.
4. Twist the Curtain Rod: Using a twisting motion, twist one side of the curtain rod until it fits snugly in the window frame. Having trouble getting your curtain rod to fit? You may need to twist in the opposite direction to reduce the width of the rod. If the rods slip after installation, add more tension by twisting counterclockwise. Then, you’re finished!
Self-Adhesive Rods
If you're looking for a drill-free way to hang small, lightweight curtains, this self-adhesive curtain rod may do the trick. This rod is easy to install – just peel off the paper and stick them on your window frame. Use self-stick hooks and rods on non-painted surfaces only.
1. Clean the Installation Area: Go over each installation spot with a damp paper towel that has rubbing alcohol on it – water also works. Then go back over each spot with a dry paper towel.
2. Remove the Adhesive Covers: The adhesive covers are located on the curtain rod’s mounting brackets.
3. Press Onto the Wall: Using both hands, press the curtain rod/mounting brackets onto the wall. Hold firmly for 15–30 seconds before releasing pressure to ensure the rods will stay in place.
4. Let the Rod Set: Allow the rod’s adhesive to set for about 30 minutes before adding the curtain rod and curtains.
Self-Adhesive Hooks
Self-adhesive hooks are another great way to uphold curtain rods and curtains without drilling. They are easy to apply and remove, and they're available in a variety of finishes. Most self-adhesive hooks come with a recommended weight capacity – choose your number of hooks based on the weight of your curtains and rod.
1. Clean the Installation Area: Wipe the installation spots with a damp paper towel that uses either rubbing alcohol or water. Then dry each spot with a dry paper towel.
2. Remove the Adhesive Sticker: Self-adhesive hooks usually come with adhesive stickers. One side is labeled to attach to the back of the hook, and the other side is labeled to attach to the wall.
3. Press Down Your Hooks: Take off the backing of the hook adhesive side, and press it onto the back of the hook. Hold for 15–30 seconds to ensure proper adhesion.
4. Remove the Wall-Side Adhesive: Remove the backing on the wall side of your adhesive. Press the hook into the wall for 15–30 seconds. Repeat the same process for as many hooks as you want. Use a level to ensure that each hook rests along the same horizontal line and prevent the curtain rod from resting on an angle.
5. Let the Hooks Set: Allow the hook’s adhesive to set for about 30 minutes before adding the curtain rod and curtains.
