Ask an Editor: How to Choose a Desk for Multiple Monitors?

The ultimate setup.

Dear Editor,

I want to create a practical workspace in my apartment but I’m not sure where to begin. I just got a new job that has me working fully remotely for the first time. I’ve only ever worked in an office building, so my home office setup is lacking. Ideally, I would have a separate office space, but I currently share my apartment with a roommate so my workspace is limited to my bedroom. So, I’m looking for any advice on how to design an office setup in my bedroom that’s conducive to work.

My biggest concern is that – being a software engineer – I have a lot of technology that needs to fit on my desk in order for me to work effectively. I use two 27" monitors side by side, an ergonomic keyboard, and like to have space for my laptop and notebook on my desk as well. Do you have any tips on how to choose a home office desk for multiple monitors so my workspace can accommodate all of my tech? What other essentials do I need to complete my home office? Many thanks.

Sincerely,
Maybe Too Many Monitors

Dear Maybe Too Many Monitors,

First of all, congrats on your new job! I think the best option here would be to keep your two monitors off of the main desk surface, and there’s a couple ways we can do this! One option would be to choose an L-shaped desk, which works great if you have a corner to place it in. This gives you two desk surfaces and plenty of space for all your tech. The other option would be to choose a desk with a built-in dual-monitor mount so you can keep them raised off the primary desk surface, providing plenty of surface space for your ergonomic keyboard, laptop, notebook, pens, and any other desk accessories.

Many gaming desks even have a second level for your monitors. You can also consider desks with other features like cable management, built-in outlets, and keyboard trays that can help you organize your tech.

Keeping your workspace neat and comfortable should be a priority since you’re combining it with your sleeping space. The last thing you want to do is bring stressful energy into your bedroom. After picking a desk with ample space, choose a comfortable ergonomic office chair to go with. Use desktop organizers to neatly store away all your office supplies like sticky notes, pens, staplers, and other supplies, and slip a desk pad on top of your desk to serve as a reminder to keep your main work surface clear. A designated desk lamp would be great for providing direct light when working on overcast days or into the night without having to rely on your overhead bedroom light.

Good luck with your new job, you’ll nail the home office set up!

Sincerely,
Wayfair Editor
