11 Creative Ideas for Decorating a Corner
Fill empty corners with style.
Corners. Every room has them, but what are we supposed to do with them? You could leave them empty, of course, but that's no fun! Why not make the most of these various spaces throughout your house to get creative? We'll get you started with a few of our favorite ideas for decorating a corner.
1. Play With Color
If you've been wanting to experiment with color but aren't sure how to begin, consider creating a colorful corner. Find an accent chair or a garden stool in a vivid color to really make that corner pop. Add a colorful area rug, and voila!
Make the most of an otherwise useless corner by filling it with a big piece of furniture: a dresser in the bedroom, a china hutch in the dining room, a curio cabinet in the living room. You don't have to find one that's designed to fit in a corner. Any tall or wide cabinet that fits in the space will do.
Display your favorite knick-knacks on an open shelving unit. A ladder bookshelf lends an airy feel to the corner and provides you and your guests with a nice view of your assorted decor.
Displaying books is always an interesting way to decorate a space. A corner provides the perfect spot for stacking them floor to ceiling if you desire. Alternatively, you can place them on a corner bookcase or hang them on the wall with floating bookshelves.
Place an accent chair and ottoman (or a chaise lounge) in the corner to create a cozy seating area. A comfy blanket and a throw pillow will make the space just right for curling up with a good book. Hang pendants lights for function as well as visual interest.
A corner is the perfect place for a small home office. With little more than a desk, chair, and area rug, you can create a cozy and efficient workspace. You'll wonder how you ever did without it!
When decorating a corner, consider creating a vignette. Set up a console table or display cabinet and fill it with a combination of practical things and stuff you love. On the wall, add art, mirrors, or whatever complements your theme.
A big, leafy plant is always a nice addition to a space. An indoor tree can fit neatly into an otherwise empty corner to add beauty and color. If the area is especially dark, consider a faux plant instead of a live one.
Corners – even those by a window – are notoriously dark. Brighten yours up with attractive lighting. Place a decorative lamp on an accent table or use a standalone floor lamp to make your corner look bigger and brighter. Add a mirror behind the lamp for an even bigger effect.
Tuck a charming home bar into any corner. Depending on how large your space is, you can display your favorite wines and spirits in a bar cabinet or home bar set. Use this idea for decorating a corner in the dining room, family room, or even your home office.
If decorating a corner isn't your thing, consider camouflaging it instead. A room divider or folding screen offers a simple way to "hide" the corner (or whatever clutter or eyesore might be lurking there).
Decorating a corner can be a fun way to express your personal design style. Use our inspiration and start shopping now.
