Derby Day Checklist: Essentials for a Southern Soiree

Bring Churchill Downs to your backyard with a Derby Day bash.

Each year in early May, thousands gather at the Churchill Downs Racetrack, and millions more tune in to watch the greatest race in American history. Since 1875, 20 horses compete every year in a one-and-a-quarter mile race for a huge prize and a chance at the triple crown. Never mind that the actual race only lasts about two minutes in total; the Kentucky Derby presents the perfect excuse to dig out your widest-brimmed hat and throw an elegant Southern-inspired party.

Whether you've hosted a Derby day soiree before or not, follow our tips to give your event a winning photo finish.

Tips!

  • Prep for the party! For tradition's sake, pick up plenty of mint julep cups; they can do double-duty as glasses or decor. You can place them around your party space to hold everything from candies to betting slips to tiny bundles of classic red roses.

  • Speaking of mint juleps—cool cocktails are a must for Derby Day. To update the classic drink of choice, check out our 5 Twists on a Traditional Mint Julep .
If mint isn't your thing, feel free to serve up any refreshing beverage of your choice to kick off the summer season (click here for some recipe inspiration!).

  • And they're off! Ensure that there is plenty of room in front of the TV so when race time rolls around, there's a place for everyone to comfortably watch. Also, make sure to watch the clock; two minutes flies by when you're having fun!

  • When decorating, try to integrate plenty of horseshoes, roses, and hunter green. Now is the time to pull out anything equestrian-themed, from napkins to drink stirrers; when in doubt, stick to classic Southern decor, such as seersucker table linens.

  • Don't forget to dress up yourself! Derby day fashion is as iconic as it is vibrant—subtlety is not on the invite list. Think vivid, summery colors, fun patterns, and of course, the quintessential statement hat.
