3 Ways to Entertain Outside This Fall

There are few seasonal moments more glorious than autumn in New England. Each year, my family gathers together for fall’s inaugural weekend. This involves a jaunt to the lake where we indulge in friendly cornhole competitions, fireside chats, and morning cups of coffee; all lakeside. With winter sneaking in, finding ways to entertain outside lands high on the seasonal agenda. Below are the three ways we make good on entertaining outdoors before the snow falls. Steal these tips for your own seasonal gatherings:
Outdoor Dining
1. Move the table: Choose either a picnic table—or, go on, be brave and bring that dining room table outdoors. Don't worry about having matching chairs. Choose an eclectic mix to add visual variety.
2. Add lighting: Generate the perfect ambiance. I’ve always been a sucker for bistro lights, but if you’re getting really rustic with it (and why shouldn’t you?), go ahead and hang an outdoor lantern with candles or, even better, extend an indoor chandelier. Whimsical? Maybe. But as I mentioned, this is meant to be a spectacular affair.
3. Inject warmth: Line the center of the table with pillar candles and pumpkins. Guests will feel warm and relaxed.
Cozy Porch Conversations
1. More blankets, please: Cooler temps can deter people from casually lounging outside. I lay out the thickest woolen blankets I can find so guests don't think twice about pulling up a seat.
2. Add table space: I add plenty of side table space for an oversized mug of apple cider.
3. Don't forget the ottoman: Lastly, I provide ample ottoman space. Giving guests a place to literally put their feet up is a subtle way of saying, “Stay awhile!"
Fire Pit Lounging
1. Keep hands warm : I waste no time putting out tin mugs and a carafe filled with hot cocoa. There's something about casually holding a hot beverage that keeps conversation flowing.
2. Display a coat rack : Again, blankets are a must. I bring out the standing coat rack from the hallway and hang a plethora of throws for guests to choose from—the thicker the better.
3. Offer food: I circulate a few charcuterie boards overflowing with smoked meats and farm-fresh cheese. Whether or not guests are hungry, quick eats get company feeling right at home.
