Never Kill a Houseplant Again
Start with a low-maintenance plant and try these trusted tips.
To purify the air and boost your mood, houseplants are a bright, welcome addition. But keeping them alive can be a challenge. If your green thumb has failed you in the past, opt for a low-maintenance plant, like bromeliads or succulents, and try the three tips we swear by to give your greenery the longest shelf life possible.
1. Choose the Right-Sized Planter.
While plants need room to spread out, a pot that’s too big can cause a buildup of excess water, and a too-small container can suffocate the roots. For the right fit, place slow-growing plants in a pot that’s one to two inches larger than its diameter, and opt for multi-sized sets for fast-growing plants.
2. Find a Watering System That Works for You.
If your plant’s not near the faucet, keep a full pitcher or small watering can nearby as an easy reminder. When you’re on the go or out of town, look to self-watering planters or watering globes that will keep your greenery healthy for up to two weeks.
3. Think About Placement.
If your plant needs low or moderate light, set it a few feet from the window and bring in a plant stand to keep it elevated. For sun-loving plants, hang a planter directly in front of a window that gets six or more hours of light each day.
