Life Hack: Embroider Your Favorite Blanket
Refresh any throw with the easiest sewing project ever.
Tired of the pattern (or lack of) on your blanket? Stitch your own design, like arrows or plus signs, or sew on patches to give your blankets some personal touches.
What You'll Need:
- Thread or yarn
- Embroidery needle
- Patches of fabric
1. Monogram with a Twist
Give a traditional monogram a fresh update with a bright hue and a funky pattern. (We love this tribal take on chevron.)
With boldly-hued embroidery floss and an embroidery needle, sew your monogram onto a scrap of fabric to make it really stand out. We cut our scrap of fabric into a circle, but a heart or star shape would work as well. Then, with thread, sew the fabric onto the blanket.
2. Whimsical Arrows
For a cute adornment, sew arrows onto your blanket. We sewed them onto just the edge, but we love the idea of having them scattered all over the blanket.
With yarn and an embroidery needle, sew arrows of different sizes onto the blanket. The threads of this blanket are spaced far apart enough, so we could easily redo any arrows that didn't turn out right.
3. Ombre Hearts
Make this simple blanket for a loved one by sewing heart-shaped pieces of fabric onto a blanket in an ombre pattern.
Stitch 3-inch fabric hearts onto the blanket with a needle and thread. To create the ombre, start with the darkest color in the corner and have the hearts get lighter as you go out, until you've filled one corner of the blanket. To get the spacing right, use safety pins to secure the hearts before you sew.
4. Row of Plus Signs
Create a positive vibe with a row of plus signs along the bottom hem! We love how the yellow pops on this sleek gray blanket.
Using yarn and an embroidery needle, sew the pattern onto the blanket. Try to keep the plus signs evenly spaced. We used the blanket's pattern to our advantage—each plus sign is one diamond shape apart.
