DIY Paper Straw Wreath

Make this elegant wreath for your next afternoon DIY project. Place it in your entryway or above the mantel for a chic decoration that transitions from fall to winter with ease. We used birch-patterned paper straws to create a sunburst-style shape, and added a satin bow for a luxe touch. See our step-by-step instructions below for how to make this DIY wreath for fall!

​Supplies

12-inch Styrofoam wreath base
1 Styrofoam cup
2 cartons of paper straws (200 straws total)Scissors
Glue gun
1 pack glue gun sticks
Tape​
Wired satin ribbon​

​Step 1​

Tape the wreath base to a surface suitable for crafting. Once the wreath is secure, take the Styrofoam cup, flip it upside down, and tape it to the surface in the center of the wreath base. This will act as the center opening of the wreath while you are gluing to help you keep the center circle even. Securing these to a base will make it much easier to craft your wreath without it moving all over the place.

Step 2

Once the glue gun is heated up, add a dab of hot glue on the wreath base and place a straw with the end flush to the cup in the center. Continue this with more straws, keeping them about an inch apart on the wreath base so they are flush around the center cup. This is the base layer of straws for the wreath.

Step 3

​Once there are straws all the way around the wreath, fill in the next layer of straws. Place them in the middle of each open section of the base, which will require angling the end of the straw so that it sits just above the original layer. Continue this all the way around the wreath.

Step 4

Now, take a handful of straws and cut off 3-4 inches. Once you have a good amount of straws at that length, begin the next layer of the wreath. Instead of lining up the end of the straw with the cup, line up the end of the straw with the wreath base. This will create layered, dynamic effect with different lengths of straws. Continue this layer all the way around. Let glue dry for about 15 minutes.

Step 5

For the last layer, cut the straws so they're about 2-3 inches long. Then glue this layer on top of the original straw layer below, lining up with the center cup. Continue all the way around for the last layer.

Tip! Once this last layer is complete, let the glue dry and then add straws to fill in any holes, especially where you can see the Styrofoam base.

Step 6​

Take the wired satin ribbon and tie into a bow of your desired size. Then use the glue gun to secure it to the wreath. Hang the wreath with removable hooks, suction hooks, or tape.
