DIY Paper Snowflake Ornament
Decorate your tree with these adorable oversized paper snowflakes.
Adorn your tree with a collection of these oversized DIY paper snowflakes. Make them in a dark shade or a bright color for an unexpected twist, or stick to classic white for a more traditional statement. Gather up some basic crafting supplies, turn on the holiday tunes, and enjoy crafting these adorable paper snowflakes with our step-by-step instructions below.
Supplies
- One sheet of construction paper (per snowflake)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Double-sided tape
- Clear twine
Instructions (for one 6½-inch star)
Step 1
From the construction paper, cut out five 3-inch squares.
Step 2
Fold one square in half, diagonally, to make a triangle. (See second image from left above.)
Step 3
Fold the paper in half again, with the folded part closest to you and the opening at the top. This will make a smaller triangle. (See second image from right above.)
Step 4
Cut three slices into the paper, beginning at the fold and parallel to the longest edge of the triangle. (See image far right above.)
Step 5
Unfold the paper square (see image far left below). Overlap the center flaps, in a cylinder shape, to create the center of this snowflake section. Glue into place.
Step 6
Take the next two flaps and bend them back in the other direction. Overlap the two points and glue into place (see image second from left below). Repeat this step with the remaining flaps, alternating the direction of the flaps each time (see image second from right below).
Step 7
Repeat steps 1-7 with each of the remaining squares to make five sections of the snowflake. Using double sided tape, overlap and connect the endpoints of each piece to create the center of the snowflake (see image far right below).
Step 8
Glue the sides of each section together to secure the snowflake. Then, make a small cut on the point of one section, loop a 4-inch piece of twine through, and tie to create the hanger.
Tip!
For a more dynamic look on your tree, experiment with different size squares to make larger and smaller snowflakes. Start with 3-inch squares and then go up in size for easier folding.
