Roshele Allison from NW Home Designers

roshele headshot

Location: Mercer Island, Washington
Decorating Style: Whatever my client's vision is. I see myself as someone to help them achieve their style that also best suites their lifestyle. This allows me to dabble in ALL styles as I do not have a favorite. They all have merit and intrigue.
Bio: Roshele has had an interest in remodeling since she was a little girl putting an addition/remodeling her Barbie Dream House. After she graduated high school, she moved to Seattle to attend the Art Institute for Interior Design. Most of her career she worked as an on-staff designer for Design-Build Companies where she designed, estimated, and sold projects into construction and the design project managed them. About eight years ago she started her own company, allowing her more time to spend in design and more time with her family.

These clients wanted something contemporary but timeless. It had to be easy to maintain and have clean lines. The house is surround by green trees and a view of the sound; by keeping the colors neutral, the colors of the outside do not change the colors in their kitchen, instead they complement them. They entertain, so a second sink and wine refrigerator were a must! It also allows for their son to help prep in the kitchen while the chef has their own area.

Kim Power from Dick Clark + Associates

Kim headshot

Location: Austin, Texas
Decorating Style: Definitively modern, with a strong sense of warmth and texture. I'd call it "design" style, though, rather than "decorating," since I am an Architect and not an Interior Designer.
Bio: Kim is a Senior Associate at Dick Clark + Associates, which focuses on custom residential projects in the Austin and central Texas area. With a deep-rooted appreciation for site-specific design that responds first and foremost to its surroundings and its inhabitants, she leads design teams in developing designs that are as beautiful as they are functional. She lives in Austin with her husband, two young daughters, and boxer dog.

I'd describe the project as a "Hill Country contemporary" styled house, with a strong sense of its surroundings. We brought the outdoors in at every opportunity, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, and continuing the wood ceilings and textured stone walls throughout the house, from interior to exterior. The house conveys a sense of thoughtfulness, as every detail was tailored to how the owners live on a day-to-day basis. Case in point: the integrated under-counter coolers just inside the door to the pool deck. Enjoying their home and hosting gatherings was definitely a big part of the owners' program, so we worked hard to create spaces that would feel equally comfortable when it was just the two of them and their dogs taking in the gorgeous views, as well as when they had a large group of friends and family over to hang out by the pool.

This butler's pantry, overlooking the backyard, is part of a whole-house renovation in a charming, 1920s home in the coveted Heritage Area of Libertyville. Originally, this space housed the main sink and dishwasher in a tiny kitchen, but we gutted, reconfigured, and enlarged the kitchen into the former dining room, making room for a convenient butler's pantry, which is steps away from the kitchen and dining room. Other highlights of the butler's pantry include: recessed panel, maple cabinets painted celery green, seafoam green quartzite countertops that match the kitchen counters, and neutral linen window shades embroidered with ferns.

Liz Tiesi from Threshold Interiors NYC

Bio: Liz Tiesi, owner and lead designer at Threshold Interiors, opened her own design firm to provide a fresh approach to the creation of residential spaces. Her design philosophy envisions interiors that are in keeping with the local vernacular, but are still sophisticated and reflect her clients' desires. This was a wonderful renovation of a truly grand home on Nantucket that had been covered in florals and heavy draperies and carpets for years. We renovated all of the spaces throughout the home and let in the natural light to highlight the beauty of this 1890s house and created a family friendly beach retreat.

A contemporary custom home in Chevy Chase, the clients are avid Hugh Newell Jacobsen fans and approached us with the Jacobsen "Dream House" in mind. We purchased the plans and customized nearly everything but the footprint. This is one of my favorite projects I have worked on, and despite being based on the Jacobsen "Dream House," it proved to be a spectacular opportunity to be creative with the design. The home is a reflection of the clients and their lifestyle, every room has unexpected architectural elements and details that make it truly special.

Brooke Eversoll, CMKBD from Bee Studios

brooke headshot

Location: St. Petersburg, Florida
Decorating Style: Eclectic! Personally, I love so many styles. I live in a 1940's bungalow in a historic neighborhood. I am very drawn to mid-century modern. I also love contemporary design, industrial, and vintage. I think just one of those styles would be too overwhelming or trendy, so I love to mix them up in my own home. But I do love designing Contemporary projects for clients. Contemporary design is a challenge in the sense that every line and detail matters. It is as much about what you "don't" put in the design, as it is about what you do put in the design. Your eye will go right to a line that isn't in the right place if you aren't thoughtful in your design approach.
Bio: : Brooke has been an artist her whole life. She went to Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota and was accepted into their very rigorous Computer Animation program. After earning her BFA, she jumped into the interior design world. She has a strong understanding and training on textures and lighting. She brings all the principles she learned in school with her into her projects – color, scale, and proportion. Brooke views interiors as an interactive sculpture- every view and angle counts. She has been designing since 2004. She is a member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and is on the board of the local Central Florida chapter. She just earned the highest coveted certification in her field this year, Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD).

This project was fun and unique! The clients asked for color. I still remember my first design presentation with them and I had an array of bright colors and materials laid out, and they told me not to hold back. They wanted an explosion of color. The husband really wanted red incorporated into the project. I suggested a high gloss red cabinet finish for the wine bar and the high bar at the island. The countertop on the island is a recycled glass made from old stained glass from churches called Millefiori, which is Italian for "a thousand flowers" and features glass in 12 colors. I also incorporated color into the backsplashes, the fireplace, and the wall colors.

We wanted to design a space that respected the architecture of our clients 1960's ranch home while also providing all the amenities of a modern chef's kitchen. It has a mid-century vibe while maintaining a light and airy feel.

Abbey Ragsdale and Abby Smith from Smith and Ragsdale Kitchen Design

abbey headshot

Location: Dallas, Texas
Decorating Style: Intentional. We design and select materials with the end-users at the forefront of our minds. A well-designed kitchen should reflect the client/family, enhancing their experience of life and how they interact with their space.
Bio: Smith & Ragsdale is an award-winning design team, recognized as the premier residential kitchen design team in Texas, offering distinctive, innovative, and truly functional solutions for your home. We believe that every kitchen has unique solutions achievable through expert planning. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to successful kitchen design, and our collaborative approach creates synergy that will serve to set your kitchen apart.

Everything about this kitchen was planned down to the last degree, just like the client's recipes. The primary goal of the project was that the kitchen, dining room, and living room space be expertly integrated to serve multiple uses: from pouring a glass of wine to brewing a cappuccino; from quickly preparing lunch for employees to cooking an impromptu dinner party for friends. The kitchen, as all kitchens do, needed to really perform.

Michael Ferzoco from Eleven Interiors

michael headshot

Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Decorating Style: My personal preference is the collision of classic contemporary and Art Deco (which has always been the most luxurious style). In practice, however, the real creative challenge is getting inside our clients' heads to create a reality out of their dream, to design spaces specific to how our clients' live and work and play. We wouldn't design a client's city apartment the same way we'd design their country/beach house.
Bio: Michael's early career in corporate finance brought him to Paris for several years. Surrounded by incredible architecture, design, art, and fashion he realized that he needed to pursue his true calling in the architecture and design industry. He began his formal design education in his mid 30s and worked part time for a large, high-end interior design firm. He started his own firm out of his apartment more than 10 years ago and now has a group of colleagues to collaborate with on a wonderful variety of design projects.

How did you decide to use a wine cooler in this room?

roshele headshot

The clients both LOVE wine and wanted one placed where their favorites are close at hand and easy to access to serve their guests.

Kim headshot

Easygoing entertaining is very important to how this house "lives," and the generous kitchen island provides a natural hangout area. We decided to tuck the wine fridge and drink cooler into the end of the island so that they would be easily accessible to both hosts and guests, but also out of the way of other appliances and kitchen activities. This spot is also immediately inside a dramatic set of sliding glass doors that opens out onto the pool deck, so they're in the perfect spot to serve the outdoor space as well.

susan headshot

The U-Line wine refrigerator was a must-have for our client, a single, former California resident who loves to entertain and enjoys a glass of vino, especially from her former home state! The fridge is relatively small, but it can chill up to 43 bottles in two temperature zones on wine racks trimmed with solid beech wood. Cheers!

liz headshot

This fridge is in the basement and we decided to use this here so when the family entertains they would have access to wine or beverages as needed. There is a table tennis table and movie viewing area as well, so the family wanted to access beverages without running up to the kitchen!

jp headshot

As the heart of the home, the kitchen was given great consideration during the design process- Sometimes, it's used for just the homeowners and other times for the extended family that come to stay for weeks at a time with many small children. We wanted the wine cooler and bar to be accessible from the kitchen, yet out of the way of people cooking. We designed a large island to facilitate the perfect place to integrate a wine cooler so that family and guests could have access to drinks in the kitchen and dining area without disrupting the flow of traffic in the food prep area. In order to create a seamless aesthetic, we designed a companion cabinet on the opposite end of the island to mimic the wine cooler (with a stainless steel-framed glass cabinet door), which houses liquor and bar accessories; the wine cooler and cabinet look cohesive yet serve two separate functions.

erica headshot

The clients are entertainers who wanted a wine fridge.

brooke headshot

The alcove location of the new bar is where the TV was previously. The client requested the TV over the fireplace. This nook was the perfect location for a small dry bar. A dry bar means there is no plumbing. The client wanted wine storage, liquor storage, and barware. The wine cooler is great in this area because it is near the living room and the pool area, so it adds an additional entertaining space in the home.

jennifer headshot

Providing a separate fridge for wine with easy access to the dining and living rooms was a must for our clients who love to entertain!

abbey headshot

The decision to use wine storage in this space was client-driven. Our client is a trained chef who loves to entertain, so it was important to her that we included top-of-the-line wine storage.

michael headshot

It was the architect's idea, truth be told. The home doesn't have a wet bar area. We knew the dining area would be comprised of artwork, glass walls, and a very large custom table....no credenza or side board to house the wine cooler. And logically, the wine cooler needed to bridge the living spaces with the kitchen "work zone" (the other side of the island).

A tip or trick for integrating a wine refrigerator into a room?

roshele headshot

It's different for everyone, they either want it discrete so a cabinet panel is used on the door, or they want it to be seen which also allows them to see the contents through the glass door. A wine refrigerator in any space should be easy to access and work with the design. It should also be placed so that it does not get in the way of the cook but be easy for the cook to get to, not to mention others who may desire a glass of wine.

Kim headshot

I'd say try to keep it out of the way of other kitchen components; this allows everyone to have easy access to it, and ensures that it won't get in the way of other cooking or serving functions. And ample adjacent countertop space, for serving, is key!

susan headshot

I prefer it to look like a refrigerator – no integrated panel – and the location is based solely on the layout. It could be between cabinets or on an end. Convenience is key – the wine refrigerator must be easily accessible for entertaining and have sufficient swing room for the door, but if there are children or grandchildren in the home, make sure the fridge can be locked!

liz headshot

Make sure you plan your cabinetry size to accommodate the fridge you want. 24" is the most popular size for an under-counter fridge. Having a custom-cabinetry company who can accommodate and design around any and all size appliances is extremely helpful.

jp headshot

Considering how the space will be used during various times is critical to the placement of a wine cooler. It should work for the everyday living when it's just the family, as well as during entertaining when there are multiple guests in the home. Proximity to the kitchen is often critical, as access to wine goes hand-in-hand with cooking, entertaining and serving.

erica headshot

Wine fridges do not take up a lot of room, so really you can fit them pretty much anywhere in the kitchen. I especially like them on the ends of kitchen islands. Don't be afraid to mix today modern sensibilities with yesterday's charm as we did here in this kitchen. A little new with the old makes things timeless.

brooke headshot

There are ways to design wine fridges and fridge drawers with panels so they match the cabinetry exactly. But honestly, most of the bars I design the clients want the wine fridge visible. I have even designed them at ends of islands so they are visible and accessible. It is a luxury item and clients usually like to show them off. Wine fridges generally take the space of a dishwasher (24"), but there are even 12" and 6" versions on the market now so they can virtually go anywhere.

jennifer headshot

Put some thought into the ideal location for a wine fridge in your space. Ideally, it would be located near a cabinet with wine glasses and with easy access to entertaining areas.

abbey headshot

First, we plan to integrate wine storage where it makes the most sense. In some cases, this is hidden away in a bar area to be truly functional. We can tuck a small wine unit in the side of an island or behind a taller cabinet. In other cases, a clients' wine collection is the focal point of a room and taller units can integrate seamlessly into surrounding cabinetry.

michael headshot

Clad the wine refrigerator in the same material as the built-in cabinet that houses it (here we used bamboo). The "appliance attributes" have to disappear...the glass is all that should be visible.
