This is a quality made cat scratcher, which my cat only uses as a perch. I discovered that she does not use scratching posts (she uses the area rugs for her scratching needs). But I need to mention that the base shouldve been made larger, as it almost toppled over the first time my small cat jumped up on the perch, and it spooked her. You could maybe secure it to a wall for stability, although it doesnt come with any hardware to do that with. Or put a heavy object in the middle of the base to make it more secure. My cat has since learned to jump on the perch from the bed, which is a little bit higher than the perch. Bottom line is, unless you can make it more stable, I wouldnt recommend this scratcher if your cat is large and a zealous scratcher, or older and has trouble jumping up (thus, the danger of pulling it over on itself, like mine almost did). I love how open it is. I kind of wish this one came with the step. Im not sure if the cats would use it, though. I already have one, and it has the front opening. My cats are both good size. This ones a little bit easier. I think for cats to go in and out of. Im not sure how long the bottom piece will last as it seems to be more material than hard plastic. I have had this now for about a month and I love it. I plan on getting another one and replacing the other one as they use this one most often. The other is the typical small opening and the waste draw is small and always needs to be adjusted as nothing falls forward and I can't find the right size bags, no company to order supplies from..
